Temporary Store Closure

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We have decided to close our doors for the time being. We have dreaded this decision, both because selling books is our livelihood and because we believe that bookstores serve the common good. It is clear to us now, though, that our responsibility to our neighbors and to our own elderly and immune-compromised friends and family is to enact social distancing as rigorously as possible.

While our doors are locked, we do still hope (and need!) to keep the books flowing out and the rent & grocery money flowing in. We will remain available from 10-5 handling online and phone orders. Here are two options for you to get your books:

1. Arrange a pick up. Call (503-251-5383) or email (adam@theologybooks.com) with your order, arrange a time, and we will run the books outside to you! Inquiries and wish lists are very welcome.

2. $3 Shipping. For the time being we are offering a flat charge of $3 shipping for up to 5 books. This includes almost any new book in print, shipped direct from our distributor in Roseburg, OR, meaning that books will typically be delivered to West Coast residents within 1-2 days!! (Don’t worry if you live elsewhere––our distributor has warehouses in several states across the US meaning we can get books to any US address very quickly)

3. Buy on our website. With the extra time, we hope to be filling out our offering of books available for direct purchase on our website. Check out our page Books Our Friends Wrote

4. Gift Certificates are 10% OFF!! Buy a gift certificate in any denomination at a 10% discount. Our GC’s never expire and are good for new and used books. Call or email me and I’ll ship it to you.

In addition to our regularly-updated $5 Book shelves, we will be posting more pictures of our shop’s sections to our website for a digital browsing experience. Children’s Books are uploaded and browsable for all my fellow parents struggling through the closure of schools and libraries.

Thank you for the support and regard so many of you have shown us already. It means the world. Please continue practicing kindness toward one another and remembering immune-compromised, poor, and elderly folks through the long weeks and months ahead. We will get through this.

Peace,

Adam, Jared, Jon, Katrina, Jennifer, Sparky

Minimizing Infection Risk at the Bookstore

Friends and Neighbors,

We want to write with an update on our procedures here at the shop for the coronavirus. You are no doubt tiring of these updates by now, but it seems important to make clear our commitment to the following:

– Regularly sanitizing down touchable surfaces

- Keeping hand sanitizer available (we have two massive jugs)

- Regular hand washing by employees

- This Saturday’s NW ETS conference has been cancelled and we will not running tables at any major events for the near future.

We are more than happy to ship orders directly to you, both new books from our distributor warehouse (20% off retail!) as well as anything in the shop. Shipping rates are $4 per book + $1 thereafter.

Speaking of which, we have two cases of Fred Sanders books from the cancelled conference, now available at a drastic discount on our fancy new e-commerce portal on the website.

Please be safe, friends.

Fred Sanders at NW ETS

*UPDATE* The NW ETS conference has been cancelled in accordance with covid-19 preparedness measures. We will continue to have the books available at a considerable discount for the next week or two, hopefully selling enough to cover the cost of shipping them back!

This Saturday we will be selling books at the NW ETS meeting. Among other books, featured speaker Fred Sanders has written two excellent books on the Trinity:

The Triune God [New Studies in Dogmatics]

Deep Things of God: How the Trinity Changes Everything

Both are available for preorder through our fancy new e-commerce set up here on the website (just click the links). We are happy to offer the conference discount and ship to those of you who will not be attending. If you want to pre-order the book for pickup at the conference, just select “in-store pickup” under shipping.

Fred Sanders is a systematic theologian with an emphasis on the doctrine of the Trinity, teaching at the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University. He and his wife Susan have two adult children and are members of Grace Evangelical Free Church. He blogs regularly at Scriptorium Daily.

For Sale: 10,000 Book Lot of Religion, History, & Philosophy

Longtime friends of Wipf & Stock will know that the press was originally started as a joint venture between John Wipf of Archives Bookshop in Pasadena and Jon Stock of Windows Booksellers here in Portland and Eugene.

While the press has grown in ways we could not have imagined back in 1993, the Eugene bookshop has continued apace, plugging away in the basement of “The Strand" (an old Edsel dealership we share with the publisher), and more recently occupying an old corner grocery store in North Portland. We have been content as a small cohort of book lovers buying and selling quality scholarly books in religion, biblical studies, philosophy, and widely in the humanities.

In recent years we have had the good fortune to acquire many truly excellent collections of books from some great scholars. Unable to say "no" to great books even when duplicated in our inventory, we have found ourselves with more books than we can handle at our current capacity. This is where you come in.

We are offering a collection of 10,000 religion books, very strong in theology, biblical studies, church history, and commentaries. While we do not have an itemized list of the collection, we will be happy to answer any questions and can provide more pictures on request. 90% of the books are in VG+ condition with most of the hardcovers in dust jackets with mylar covers.

Reasonable offers on this lot will be considered. We are able to coordinate domestic and international shipping and will be happy to answer any questions about the lot or logistical matters. You may inquire with Adam McInturf by email: adam@theologybooks.com

If you know of any party who might be interested, whether a new seminary, church library, or upstart bookseller, please feel free to forward this email to them.

So excited that we are going to HAVE FREE COFFEE AND COOKIES to celebrate!

SATURDAY, JUNE 6th: All books at our book nook in Cathedral Coffee Scappoose will be on sale at $2HC & $1PB. There are amazing books up there––I can testify because I put them there myself!

And next week, back at on home front . . .

All Theology and Biblical Studies will be 30% OFF!

Our big sale in June was a huge success. We moved loads of the $2 & $1 books we set outside, but it seems that book-fatigue set in for many people. There was just too much to process with all those good cheap books out front, so our ancillary goal of clearing space on the shelves for new stock was somewhat unfulfilled.

So I am extending the sale one more week: Everything in Theology, Biblical Studies, Church History, Devotional, and Biblical Studies will be 30% off from Monday the 8th – Saturday June 13.

Happy Hunting!!
